Last week you picked a platform and got it live. Now the single highest-ROI thing you’ll ever build in email: the welcome sequence. Set it up once and it greets every new reader at their warmest moment — the day they signed up — without you lifting a finger again.
Here’s the trap most authors fall into: they collect subscribers, then… nothing. The reader grabs the freebie, hears crickets for three weeks, and by the time you finally email them they’ve forgotten who you are. A welcome sequence catches that heat. Five emails, a day or two apart. Here’s exactly what each one does.
Email 1 — Deliver & welcome (immediately). Hand over whatever they signed up for, make sure the link actually works, and say in one warm line who you are and what to expect. Don’t sell. Deliver and set the tone.
Email 2 — Your story (day 2). Why you write what you write. This is the one that turns a downloader into a fan — people stay for a person, not a product. Keep it human, not a résumé.
Email 3 — Start here (day 4). Point them to the one book to read first, and link it. A hook, not a hard sell: “if you liked the freebie, you’ll love this.”
Email 4 — Ask a question (day 6). Invite a reply. “What are you reading right now?” works. Two payoffs: it builds the relationship, and replies tell the inbox gods you’re a real person someone talks to — which keeps you out of spam.
Email 5 — What’s next (day 8). Now you invite them deeper: your group, your next release, your ARC team. Then they roll into your regular newsletter as a warm reader instead of a stranger.
Five emails, written once, working forever. And here’s where the AI part earns its keep without anyone needing to clutch pearls: hand a good model your books, your voice, and these five jobs, and you can draft the whole sequence in an afternoon. You’re not asking it to be you — you’re asking it to get a first draft on the page so you can make it sound like you. The tool drafts; you keep it honest.
Your move this week: write the five. Don’t polish them to death — done and sending beats perfect and sitting in a doc. Next week: how to write your recurring newsletter in twenty minutes so you actually send the thing.
